A friend recommended GreenDimes to me the other day. It’s very cool. For about 10-cents per day ($36 per year), they will go out and remove your name and address from thousands of mailing lists that direct marketers purchase to send 75-90% of all the junk mail that you get. And they will plant one tree per month in your name in any of five regions around the world. I think it’s pretty neat. And anything that reduces the amount of crap I get in my mailbox is a good thing.

  3. MD – I just signed up. And I did a post as well :) The only downside seems to be that they don’t automatically catch catalogs :(

How long have you used it – has it worked for you?

  4. [...] But after my friends Om and Micheal each did a post on it, I decided to try it out. [...]

  5. Thanks for the link and the comment! :) On catalogs, my understanding is that you will start getting fewer once your name is added to the DMA list. Then when catalogers scrub their lists periodically, you will be dropped if you are on the DMA no-mail list. Of course, if you have a relationship with a company (i.e. are on their house list) you will still get that catalog. I might misunderstand, but I expect this will work OK. I haven’t seen any change in volume yet, but they warned me it would take a while. BTW, I would have paid $36 just to have the trees planted. So they should either raise prices or make a much bigger deal about the value they provide.

  6. I agree that $36 is great just for tree planting – I mean it is $3 a tree! But I also think that a dime a day is great way to pitch it to people. I mean, anyone who buys one coffee a day is spending 30x more than that.

Will keep you posted on how it goes.

  7. I hear you can give it as a gift as well.
36$ to plant trees,I think is great! Reducing junk mail is a great bonus, but don’t you think you should be able to reduce junk mail for free? Anyone have any free links or organizations that help with this?

  8. good idea

  10. Hi Mitch! Great to hear from you and thank you for leaving a comment! I wish more people who stop by would comment! :) I really like Terrapass as well. Given my car situation, I should definitely become one of their customers…I have alot of carbon sins to make up for. Hope all is well and I hope to see you soon.

  11. Update on this as of June 30 … my mail volume has decreased by at least 75% … no more junk mail catalogs, credit card offers, etc. It’s wonderful. Now I just need to find a way to get my name off the Los Altos penny-saver list. Green dimes – you rock!
